Why don't you have an architect work with you on an hourly basis to make sure those critical areas of concdern are covered?

How can I get a price quote on these exact double doors? I really like them!

This door would probably be pretty quiet if you installed laminated glass instead of tempered glass.  A threshold would help also.  (You can get laminated glass with the acid etch finish)

How is this door for "quietness"?  I want to use a door like this but it is right off the living room.

Planning For Expansion (and why we need professionals)

There are plenty of studies that explain how we humans make decisions, and the upshot seems to be that we really should not make them for ourselves. Whether choosing what to have for breakfast, who to marry and where to keep our kitchen trash--these are things we should perhaps let others decide. We are mired in our reasons, our competition with the Joneses, our need to control our destinies and a irrepressible urge to express our creativity (read: reinvent the wheel). This applies to building…See More

Which Castle Would You Choose?

Me, I choose the Historic Redstone Castle! This is all hypothetical, of course, but in this game if you move to your fantasy castle, let's also pretend that you don't have to work unless you want to, your castle comes staffed with landscapers and maintenance engineers,…See More

Building It Yourself and the Joy of Dreaming

We're building an earthship. Yup; pounding dirt into almost 1,000 tires to make the foundation and walls of a 1,100 sq. ft. home. The part of this project I love the most is that everything is still in front of us. We're not scraping old paint or replacing outdated cupboards. We're pounding dirt and dreaming of the beautiful fixtures…See More

The importance of trees

My grandfather grew up in the 20s, the youngest of nine children. During the depression, his family, like many others, lost the family farm. I can only barely begin to imagine what life was like then. Certainly they worked hard and made do and grew food. I wonder what splurging was for them? Sugar? A trip to town? If my…See More

Storing Stuff

Your spring cleaning window has passed. You either did it or you didn't and now it is time to organize what's left. We've got options: closets, drawers, garages, under beds, in our parents' attics . . .I've been thinking about storing things that are beautiful, that I want to use or at least look at.Here are some interesting shelving ideas found by googling "interesting shelves":…See More

Boating Season

It's warm, the ocean calls, the lakes are getting populated, the snow is melting and the rivers are up. You know what that means? It's boating season!Water + Human stuff does kind of weird me out. Houses underwater in these crazy floods they've been dealing with in the midwest and south? Not only is that sad, but it is just eerie. Sunken boats? Eeeek!BUT, here's a cool thing about shipwrecks. The old wood is beautiful. Check this out: (from the…See More

Listen to What the Man Said

A carpenter friend of mine was hired by an eccentric woman to turn a barn into a dog shelter. He and his partner were the third set of carpenters to work on this project, so they started work with question marks hovering over their heads. Three weeks later they were outta there. A new set of carpenters moved in and a few weeks later word got around that they, too, had moved on.Why are some work relationships easy and others hard?In the case of the dog-lady, there were many obvious issues, the…See More

The Right Stuff

What makes doing it yourself fun? When I was a college student living in a basement apartment, I had an idea for my bathroom. This tiny tiny bathroom had exposed pipes and a concrete shower stall and was just, um, icky. On a long drive I had an idea, and by that evening the bathroom was transformed. Some metallic sage Ralph…See More

The Good and Bad of Decorating with Black and White

Interior design is an ever-changing obstacle course. No one project is the same, trends and products change like the weather, and one person's masterpiece will certainly be met with shrugs or rolling eyes from another. Working with any specific color palette is like basing the success of your obstacle course on one element of your outfit--like your shorts. Certainly your choice of shorts has an impact on your final time, but without…See More

A dash of color...

Depending on where you live, you may or may not

be able to pull off a door like the one below. For one thing, it would

depend on how strict your home owner's association is. Some HOA want

all doors to be white or all doors to be brown. But, if you have a HOA

who is relaxed, or don't have one at all, then your door can probably

be however you like. Below, this door, is a great example of what a

little creativity can do for your entrance way.…

Decorative portal

Below is a picture of a really neat looking door

- though it is more of an entry way than a door. Still, it is kind of a

cool pic. Definitely goes to show you that you don't always have to

think of doors in the regular sense. They aren't always - forgive me -

an open and shut case. This may not be feasible for an entry way - as

it will surely let robbers, insects, cold air and, most unfortunately,

relative, enter without resistance. But, it is…

Artistic security

Your entry way can say a lot about you. It can

say that you care about security. It can say that you keep your windows

impeccably clean. It can even say that you haven't swept your porch

since the early 1980's. The point is that your entry way can say a lot,

so why not make it say what you want. With your entry way, you have a

chance to introduce people to your house ("House, meet John"). One of

the best ways to do this is with a unique…

Discreet security

In this day and age, all of us can use a little

security, including in our home. Most of our houses have doors, or, at

least, I am hoping they do. Sometimes, these doors provide enough

security, other times, people feel more assured with an extra layer of

protection. When this happens, some people turn to things like alarms

or blood thirty (or at least yippy) guard dogs. Other people take the

more subtle route and install a security door. The…

I never thought I would use mahogany interior doors but I keep getting drawn back to a customer photo. It is image 6 of 79 (2 doors, four panel, with blueish walls). How can I find out the stain they used? I I would want to have a brown or golden cast to my doors, no red or pink. I think their doors are wonderful! Also, could I find out the stain of image 23 (an E230 door)?
